You know exactly what needs to be done. The deadline is approaching, and the task is right in front of you. But instead of diving in, you catch yourself scrolling through your phone, rearranging your desk, or telling yourself, "I’ll be more ready in a few minutes." The longer you delay, the more overwhelming the task feels.
We've all experienced this, and it's completely normal. As humans, we naturally seek comfort and avoid discomfort. At the same time, we have an innate drive to grow, improve our focus, and get things done in a way that aligns with our goals.
Welcome to the very first Coaching on Air episode on Realizations with Clarissa! A big thank you to our guest, Jhermy Esperanzate, for his openness and generosity in sharing his journey—so that others can learn and apply these insights to their own lives.
Jhermy is a UK-based Filipino nurse, entrepreneur, and event organizer. As the founder of JhermiNation Digital, Media, and Events, he is deeply committed to empowering Filipinos in business and the arts. With a passion for innovation and a mind full of ideas, he juggles multiple responsibilities daily. Like many high-achievers, he sometimes faces the challenge of managing priorities effectively while staying on track with his goals.
During our coaching session, Jhermy’s main objective was to refine his focus, strengthen his discipline, and develop habits that lead to meaningful progress. His journey offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to overcome distractions and move forward with confidence.
The Drive for Productivity
For Jhermy, productivity is more than just getting things done—it’s about feeling a deep sense of accomplishment and knowing that his work is making a difference. He thrives on being a role model for others, showing that with the right mindset and strategy, success is within reach.
At the same time, he recognized a common challenge: staying consistent with tasks that, while necessary, aren’t always enjoyable.
Reframing Procrastination: A Mindset Shift
One of the first insights we uncovered during our session was that procrastination isn’t the real problem—it’s the effect of what you feel towards that task. When we delay tasks, it’s often because we associate them with discomfort, boredom, or even fear of failure. Instead of fighting procrastination directly, we explored the idea of working with the mind rather than against it.
I guided Jeremy through the practice of mental rehearsal, starting with a powerful visualization exercise—imagining his own funeral. This allowed him to reflect on the life he has lived so far and assess whether his current path aligns with his true desires. It helped him identify what truly matters, what he needs to let go, and whether his actions are leading him toward the life he wants for himself.
Through this process, we gained a deeper understanding of his identity, values, and deepest aspirations. Clarity on these aspects brings us one step closer to prioritizing effectively and taking the right actions.
It also highlights an important truth: sometimes, achieving our goals requires doing things we don’t always enjoy. This connects to procrastination—often, we avoid tasks because they challenge us in ways that are crucial for growth.
However, when we recognize how important these tasks are to our bigger vision for life, they start to make more sense. As a result, it becomes easier to find ways to make them more manageable and even satisfying.
A Powerful Exercise: Visualizing Productivity
Another exercise we did involved identifying where he physically felt resistance in his body when thinking about a task he tended to procrastinate on. Was it a tension in his chest? A heaviness in his stomach? A sense of unease in his shoulders?
By becoming aware of these sensations, he could acknowledge and release them rather than letting them control his decisions. This was a breakthrough moment. Instead of seeing productivity as something that required force or willpower, he realized that a grounded mental and emotional state played a huge role in his ability to take action.
Through a guided exercise, he saw an immediate shift in his energy. Instead of dreading certain tasks, he found that he could approach them with a sense of ease and flow.
Here is a summary of what we did and how you can do it:
Notice how the things you resist tend to persist? That’s because we often lack the courage to face them and the compassion to let them guide our growth.
Practical Strategies to Build Consistency
One week after our session, I followed up with Jhermy to check on his progress and dive deeper into practical strategies for taking action. Here are some tips you can also apply:
Does Coaching Actually Work?
During the coaching session, Jhermy experienced moments of silence as he took time to reflect and uncover realizations. Based on his personal experience, he shared several key benefits of coaching:
Through my conversation with Jhermy, I found myself deeply moved by his perspective. His words, "The mind is the strongest weapon that we have, and we have to really look after it, we have to harness it," resonated with me. It was a powerful reminder that personal growth is not just about overcoming challenges but about consciously shaping the way we think, act, and navigate life.
Jhermy’s realization that personal growth leads to better decisions, actions, and outcomes made me reflect on how true transformation starts from within. It’s not about waiting for circumstances to change; it’s about developing the inner strength to rise above them. Coaching, in essence, is not just guidance—it is a journey toward becoming the best version of oneself, and that is something truly inspiring. As Jhermy discovered his potential to be better and make a difference, I did too.
