What is Negative Lumping and How You Should Overcome It

Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to reach your goals? You're not alone. Many of us struggle with a mindset known as "negative lumping"—a term coined by University of Chicago researcher Ed O'Brien, PhD.

Negative lumping is when we discount our progress because we haven't fully achieved our goals. We label our efforts as failures, even when we've made significant strides forward. Sound familiar?

Consider this scenario: You set a goal to walk 10,000 steps a day, but you consistently fall short and only reach around 9,400 steps. Despite doubling your daily steps from six months ago, you still feel like you've failed.

The problem with negative lumping is that it can leave us feeling demoralised and defeated, even when we're making progress. We tend to focus on what we haven't accomplished rather than celebrating our achievements.

But there's hope. By understanding and addressing negative lumping, we can break free from self-doubt and embrace a more positive mindset.

Let's explore two common scenarios:

Scenario 1: The Near Miss

We often treat near-misses—the moments when we almost achieve our goals—as failures. For example, if we aimed to lose 10 pounds but only lost 7, we might feel discouraged instead of proud of our progress.

Scenario 2: The Comparison Trap

We also tend to devalue our accomplishments by comparing ourselves to others. If a friend lost 20 pounds while we only lost 10, we might feel inadequate, overlooking our own efforts and challenges.

So, how can we overcome negative lumping and appreciate our progress?

  • Redefine Success: Instead of focusing on arbitrary goals, ask yourself what success truly means to you. Would you be satisfied if you lost 8 pounds instead of 10? By redefining success, you can appreciate your progress and feel proud of your achievements.

  • Embrace Your Journey: Remember that everyone's journey is unique. Don't compare yourself to others or discount your efforts because they don't match someone else's. Celebrate your victories, no matter how small, and acknowledge the challenges you've overcome along the way.

  • Look for Bright Spots: Identify the moments when things went well, even if just a little. By focusing on your "bright spots," you can cultivate a positive mindset and build momentum towards your goals.

In conclusion, negative lumping can hold us back from reaching our full potential. But by challenging our mindset and celebrating our progress, we can break free from self-doubt and embrace a more positive outlook on life.
