The Trap of Overworking
You wake up before sunrise, rush through breakfast, and battle through traffic to get to work. Your day is packed with endless tasks, meetings, and deadlines. By the time you get home, you’re exhausted, yet you still find yourself answering emails or thinking about unfinished work. Even on weekends, there’s guilt about taking a break because there’s always something more to do. This cycle is familiar to many Filipinos, where working long hours is often seen as a badge of honor.
This realization struck me during my recent workshop, Paano Magka-Oras Para sa Gusto Ko?. Many attendees shared how they often neglect themselves, prioritizing work and others over self-care. It’s a common belief in our culture that success requires relentless effort and sacrifice. But the truth is, productivity and well-being must go hand in hand for sustainable success. Having experienced burnout myself and witnessing fellow entrepreneurs suffer, I want to talk about why rest is essential—not a luxury, but a necessity.
The Mistake: Believing That Taking Breaks is Wasted Time
Many people equate nonstop work with success, thinking that taking breaks is wasted time. They skip meals, sacrifice sleep, and ignore their physical and mental health in favor of productivity. Rest becomes something to be earned rather than an essential part of life. Even when they do take breaks, guilt creeps in, making it difficult to fully recharge.
The Consequences of Overworking
When you constantly push yourself without rest, the effects seep into every area of life. Fatigue reduces the quality of work, affecting creativity, focus, and decision-making. Stress and anxiety build up, leading to burnout, where you feel physically, emotionally, and mentally depleted. Your relationships suffer as well—being absent from loved ones and constantly distracted can strain even the strongest bonds. Over time, what once felt like passion for work turns into frustration and resentment, making you feel like success requires sacrificing your health and happiness.
I’ve been there, too. Burnout became my turning point, forcing me to learn what I’m now sharing through my podcast, coaching, and workshops. The lessons I’ve gained have shown me that rest isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a strategy for long-term success.
The Misconceptions About Rest
Many people hold these beliefs:
In reality, rest fuels productivity. When you allow yourself to pause, you return to work with renewed energy, sharper focus, and better decision-making skills. Sustainable success comes from balancing effort with recovery. Resting also strengthens relationships, helping you show up as a better leader, family member, and friend.
The Right Approach: Making Rest a Priority
To build a sustainable and fulfilling life, you must actively schedule rest just as you would an important meeting. Taking short breaks throughout the day, even for just five minutes, can boost energy levels. Setting clear work-life boundaries—like defining when work stops—ensures that you have time to recharge.
A strategic entrepreneur or leader doesn’t just manage time; they manage energy. They balance work, rest, and self-care, leading by example to show that rest is a smart strategy, not something that holds you back.
Balancing Productivity and Well-Being
Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People highlights the importance of balancing production (work and income-generating activities) with production capability (your well-being and ability to perform). Prioritizing self-care means making rest a routine part of life rather than something to squeeze in when time allows. Activities that promote health, such as exercise, meditation, and hobbies, play a key role in stress relief and energy renewal.
Personally, I’ve made rest a non-negotiable part of my schedule. I take breaks throughout the day, ensure I get enough sleep, and go for walks to clear my mind. I also practice digital detoxing and set boundaries—no meetings in the evenings or on Sundays. Prioritizing activities that renew my energy, such as exercise, family time, and reading, has helped me feel more recharged and productive.
A New Belief: Rest as a Productivity Tool
The shift in mindset is simple but powerful: “Rest is not optional—it’s a productivity tool. When I rest, I perform better in business and life.” Instead of viewing rest as a reward, recognize it as an essential ingredient for success.
Your Choice: Continue Pushing Through Exhaustion or Embrace Rest?
Will you keep pushing through exhaustion, or will you embrace rest as the game-changer it truly is? Sustainable success is not about working harder but working smarter. Make rest a priority, and you’ll find yourself achieving more—with greater clarity, creativity, and fulfillment.
